Position: Director of Special Services
The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School District is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, child-focused, and culturally responsive Director of Special Services. This individual will play a key leadership role in overseeing and enhancing the district's K-12 special education programs, ensuring compliance, and fostering strong community engagement.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Administration
- Develop, implement, and oversee all aspects of the district’s K-12 special education programs and related services.
- Collaborate with building principals and district leaders to align special services with the district's strategic goals and instructional initiatives.
- Manage the department's budget, ensuring efficient resource allocation while maintaining compliance with funding guidelines.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of special education programs and related services to ensure continuous improvement.
- Lead the district’s Social Work team and nurses.
Compliance and Policy
- Ensure compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and other relevant state and federal education laws and regulations.
- Develop, review, and update district policies and procedures related to special services.
- Coordinate and oversee audits, reviews, and reporting requirements for state and federal agencies.
Staff Development and Supervision
- Provide leadership, supervision, and professional development for special education teachers, related service providers, and other support staff.
- Facilitate regular training opportunities on best practices, compliance, and emerging trends in special education.
- Oversee the implementation of the Teaching Assistant Mentor Program.
- Participate in the hiring, evaluation, and retention of special education personnel.
Family and Community Engagement
- Serve as a liaison between the district and parents/guardians of students receiving special education services, fostering positive relationships and addressing concerns.
- Collaborate with community agencies and organizations to enhance services for students with disabilities.
- Organize informational sessions and resources to help families understand special education processes and services.
Program Development and Collaboration
- Work closely with instructional staff to integrate inclusive practices into general educational settings.
- Develop specialized programs and interventions to address the diverse needs of students with disabilities.
- Partner with mental health professionals and other service providers to support student well-being and success.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
- Valid state certification as a School District Administrator (SDA) or School District Leader (SDL).
- Minimum of five years of experience in special education, including teaching and leadership roles.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- In-depth knowledge of special education laws, policies, and instructional practices.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, focusing on collaboration and problem-solving.
- Experience in budgeting, data analysis, and program evaluation.
- A strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and fostering an environment of respect and understanding.
Working Conditions
- Primarily office-based, with occasional travel to school buildings, meetings, and professional development events.
- The work schedule may include evenings and weekends to accommodate parent meetings, board presentations, and other responsibilities.
