Job Description

Job Title: K–12 Science Director
Work Year: 210 Days
Reports To: Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction

Job Summary:

The K–12 Science Director provides leadership, supervision, and support for the district’s science program. This role ensures alignment with national and state standards, facilitates curriculum innovation, and oversees the effective delivery of science instruction across all grade levels. The Director works collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and district leadership to support high-quality science education that meets the diverse needs of all students.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of science curricula K–12, ensuring alignment with state and national standards and current regulations.
  • Stay informed of best practices and instructional methods in science education and serve as a resource for teachers and administrators.
  • Facilitate the development of innovative and differentiated science courses, including AIS (Academic Intervention Services), PACE, AP, STEAM, and dual enrollment/college-credit-bearing courses.
  • Coordinate the administration, scoring, and data submission of local and state science assessments; ensure accuracy and compliance with state guidelines.
  • Support and guide professional development efforts for science educators, identifying and organizing relevant learning opportunities.
  • Serve as Chair of the K–12 Science Committee and lead the committee following shared decision-making principles.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate science teachers in collaboration with building principals.
  • Assist with the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of science faculty.
  • Develop and manage department budgets, ensuring responsible use of financial resources and long-range planning for science instruction.
  • Maintain the District Chemical Hygiene Plan in compliance with applicable safety regulations.
  • May be assigned teaching responsibilities based on instructional needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Schools.

Qualifications:

  • Valid New York State certification in School District Leadership (SDL), School Building Leadership (SBL), or equivalent.
  • Master’s degree or higher in science education or a related field.
  • Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience in science, preferably across multiple grade levels.
  • Demonstrated leadership in curriculum development, teacher support, and professional learning.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with assessment coordination, data analysis, and educational planning preferred.
     

  • Full-time, 210-day work year.
  • District-wide responsibilities; travel between buildings is required.
  • Some evening or weekend commitments for meetings or events may be necessary.
