Director of School Safety and Security

Burnt Hills–Ballston Lake Central School District

The Burnt Hills–Ballston Lake Central School District is seeking a highly qualified and experienced Director of School Safety and Security to lead and coordinate district-wide safety and security efforts. This position plays a critical role in ensuring a safe and secure learning environment for students, staff, and visitors across all district facilities.


Position Summary

This position involves responsibility for developing, evaluating, and coordinating school district security measures. The Director recommends security policies and provides training to school staff in areas such as conflict resolution and safety protocols.

The work is performed under the supervision of the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent(s), with considerable independence in carrying out responsibilities. The Director supervises all district security personnel and collaborates closely with administrators, staff, law enforcement, and the broader community.


Key Responsibilities

  • Supervise and direct all district safety and security operations
  • Develop, coordinate, oversee, and evaluate security measures and protocols
  • Monitor building and grounds security, including events and after-school activities
  • Supervise, schedule, and evaluate security monitors and School Resource Officers
  • Conduct in-service training programs for security personnel
  • Train staff in conflict resolution and safety practices
  • Collaborate with administrators on student discipline and building-level concerns
  • Coordinate bullying prevention efforts with district administration
  • Represent the district with local law enforcement and community organizations
  • Attend student disciplinary hearings and safety-related meetings
  • Assist in developing and implementing policies related to safety, security, and parking
  • Prepare reports related to security operations and incidents
  • Recommend improvements and modifications to district safety procedures and infrastructure
  • Co-facilitate district-wide safety planning and emergency preparedness including overall responsibility for the development and implementation of all district and building level safety plans in cooperation with building and district level leaders as well as the district’s Health & Safety committee.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of security and safety practices for schools and public facilities
  • Strong understanding of emergency response and risk management procedures
  • Ability to lead, supervise, and evaluate staff effectively
  • Excellent judgment and ability to respond calmly in high-pressure situations
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, families, and community partners
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare detailed reports
  • Demonstrated professionalism, tact, and discretion

Preferred candidates will possess certification (or eligibility) as a General Topics Instructor, including active shooter and mental health training.


Minimum Qualifications (BHBL)

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; and
  • Ten (10) years of experience in law enforcement, corrections, or military police

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid New York State Driver’s License at the time of appointment and throughout employment


Salary

  • $70,000 - $80,000 commensurate with experience.
