Assistant Cook 

Classification: Non-Competitive 

Distinguishing Features of the Class: 

This position involves responsibility for assisting in the preparation, cooking and serving of meals in either a school, health care or correction facility. The work also involves the cleaning of kitchen equipment and it may entail small scale preparation of foods for special diets. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher level employee in the food service staff. Supervision may be exercised over the work of food service helpers. The incumbent does related work as required

Typical Work Activities: 

  • Assists in the preparation of a variety of foods; 
  • Prepares meals for infirmary patients requiring special 
  • therapeutic diets; 
  • Prepares and cooks vegetables. 
  • Prepares coffee and salads; 
  • Prepares food carts and delivers and serves meals to infirmary patients; 
  • Serves meals for employees and assists in the cleaning and setting of dining room tables; 
  • Washes and dries dishes; 
  • Maintains simple records in regard to special diets; 
  • Performs the duties of the cook in the latter's absence.  

Full Performance Knowledges, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics: 

Good knowledge of the proper methods and use of cleaning materials and equipment; working knowledge of the methods of preparing, cooking and baking of food in large quantities; ability to follow oral and written directions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Six months of experience in the preparation of food on a large scale.

Schedule:

  • Monday - Friday
  • 6:30am - 12:30pm (6 hours/day)

Cook (Cook II)

Classification: Non-Competitive 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves routine respon- sibility for the preparation, cooking and serving of meals in either a school, health care or correction facility. Depending on the size and type of institution, the duties of the incumbent may vary with respect to the number and class of employees supervised and involvement in ancillary aspects to cooking; i.e., dietary planning. The incumbent does related work as required. 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES 

  • Prepares, cooks and serves meals for students, staff, patients or inmates using standard kitchen utensils and equipment; 
  • Orders food and supplies used in the preparation of meals according to an established menu and inspects food when received to insure proper quantities and quality; 
  • Plans or assists in planning meals and menus insuring that basic nutritional principles are followed; 
  • Supervises subordinate employees or inmates in the case of the correction facility, inmates, assists in the serving of food and the cleaning of the kitchen and dining areas and cooking utensils; 
  • Insures that food and supplies are properly stored to avoid waste and spoilage; May prepare and maintain a variety of records and reports relative to the food service function. 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the principles and practices of planning, preparing, cooking and serving food in large quantities; good knowledge of modern cooking utensils, appliances and equipment; good knowledge of cleaning materials and equipment; ability to plan and supervise the work of others in the cooking and serving of food and cleaning; ability to keep simple records and make reports; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

One year of experience in the preparation of food on a large scale.

The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School District is seeking reliable, friendly, and team-oriented individuals to join our Food Service Department. These part-time, school-year positions play an important role in providing healthy meals and creating a positive dining experience for our students each day.

Food Service Workers assist with the preparation and serving of meals, maintain a clean and organized kitchen and dining area, and support the daily operations of the school cafeteria. Work is performed under the direct supervision of food service supervisory staff.

Typical Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation and serving of meals
  • Heat and portion pre-cooked foods
  • Prepare meal trays and assist with food setup
  • Wash dishes by hand or machine
  • Clean kitchen equipment, dining areas, tables, chairs, and trays
  • Clean and prepare vegetables and other food items
  • Set up and replenish dining areas as needed
  • Maintain clean dish, utensil, and linen storage areas
  • Perform related food service and sanitation duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Prior food service experience is helpful but not required
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Working knowledge of food service practices and cleaning methods is preferred
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position

  • Monday–Friday | 8:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. or 7:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (5.5 hours/day)
