Cleaner - High School (2nd Shift)

Cleaner - 2nd shift 

Work Hours: 3:00pm-11:00pm (8 hours/day)

The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School District is seeking a reliable and hardworking 2nd Shift Cleaner to maintain the cleanliness and safety of school facilities. This position plays a key role in ensuring that classrooms, restrooms, offices, hallways, and common areas are clean, sanitary, and ready for daily use by students and staff. 

Civil Service Job Description

Classification: Non-Competitive

This is routine work requiring the efficient performance of a variety of cleaning tasks. The work involves execution of these tasks through a well established routine. Direct supervision is received from a higher level supervisor. The incumbent does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

  • Dusts chairs, tables desks and other furniture;
  • Washes windows, walls, woodwork, toilets and sinks;
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums and waxes floors with various equipment designed for those purposes;
  • Gathers and disposes of refuse;
  • Cleans and polishes furniture;
  • Performs a variety of routine errands and cleaning tasks;
  • Performs a variety of related duties as required;
  • May use a district motor vehicle as assigned.

When Assigned to a School District

  • May clean blackboards and erasers;
  • May monitor rest rooms and report violations of non-smoking policy;
  • May use a district motor vehicle as assigned.

Full performance knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics: Working knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment; ability to follow oral and written direction; ability to get along well with others; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from High School or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma; OR
  • Three months of building cleaning experience; OR
  • Successful completion of a job training or job readiness program.

Special Requirements

A valid New York State Driver’s License may be required, at the discretion of the appointing authority.

This position is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly school facility while providing leadership and support to evening custodial team members. The ideal candidate has strong communication skills, hands-on experience in custodial services, and the ability to work independently and effectively supervise others.

Classification: Competitive 

This position involves responsibility for the proper cleaning, maintenance, and heating of a medium-sized school building. Work is performed in accordance with general instruction and is subject to review by a superior. Immediate supervision may be exercised over the work of employees engaged in various custodial activities. The incumbent does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

  • Supervises the operation of, or operates, a low-pressure steam, hot water, or hot air heating system;
  • Performs and supervises cleaning activities;
  • Assigns tasks to subordinates and gives instructions in the use of building cleaning supplies, materials, and equipment;
  • Makes minor carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and other building repairs;
  • Supervises or participates in the cleaning and maintenance of boilers;
  • Inspects boiler system for defects and makes necessary repairs;
  • Varnishes desks and chairs and paints lavatories, fire escapes, and doors;
  • Requisitions supplies as required;
  • Checks fire alarm system to insure proper operation in emergency;
  • Refills fire extinguishers; and
  • Performs a variety of related duties as required.

Full performance knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics: Good knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment; good knowledge of operation of low-pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment; ability to plan and lay out work; ability to supervise the work of others; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • One year of experience as a carpenter, plumber, electrician, painter, mechanic or other trades work; OR
  • Two years of experience in building cleaning and maintenance work;
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.
