The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School District is seeking a knowledgeable, customer-focused Computer Operations Support Specialist to join our Technology Department. The successful candidate will provide technical support to district staff, maintain computer hardware and software, troubleshoot technology issues, and assist in ensuring the reliable operation of district technology systems.

Civil Service Description

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This position exists in a school district and involves responsibility for providing technical assistance and support for information technology users in the district.  A Computer Operations Support Specialist provides technical assistance by installing, maintaining, diagnosing and resolving problems or questions related to computer hardware, software, networks and peripheral equipment.  Additional duties include:  designing, programming, and customizing databases and queries to meet various user needs. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a Coordinator of Network and Technology Services.  The incumbent exercises no supervision.  Does related work as required. 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Support & Troubleshooting: Deliver Tier 1 technical support to students and staff across all district facilities.
  • Hardware & Software Management: Deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot district-wide software, hardware, and peripheral equipment.
  • User Account Assistance: Assist with managing user account provisioning to ensure secure, reliable access.
  • End-User Assistance: Diagnose and resolve technical issues for end-users, escalating to senior staff when necessary.
  • Asset Management: Track technological assets, including loaner device assignments and issue resolution history, in the central database.
  • Daily Operations: Perform routine maintenance tasks, including classroom technology troubleshooting, device repair, and seasonal migration of student devices.
  • Training & Enablement: Develop and lead training sessions to help users effectively utilize hardware and software systems.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Partner with building administration and the IT team to execute technology projects and support district-wide initiatives.
  • Liaison & Consulting: Serve as a point of contact for staff and administrators to identify technology needs and implement effective solutions.
  • Program Support: Provide dedicated Tier 1 technical support for summer school and specialized district programs.
  • Additional Duties: Performs related tasks as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of database management systems, structures and techniques; Good knowledge of computer hardware, software, networks and peripheral equipment;  Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs including word processing, spreadsheet and databases at an acceptable rate of accuracy and speed;  Ability to adapt to changing technical environment;  Ability to install and maintain software and hardware and other peripheral equipment;  Ability to communicate orally and in writing;  Ability to analyze the database requirements of a variety of computer applications and to design appropriate relational database structures;  Ability to advise and train others in computer operation, software and database applications;  Ability to problem-solve computer user hardware and software problems;  Ability to understand and interpret complex oral instructions and/or written directions; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; Ability to perform close, detail work involving considerable visual effort and concentration;  Ability to design, program and customize databases and advanced queries and reports to meet user defined needs;  Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State college or university with an Associate’s degree in any field which must have included twelve(12) credit hours in management information systems, computer science, computer technology, information resource management, data processing or related computer field and one (1) year of experience installing, maintaining, diagnosing, and resolving problems related to computer hardware, software, networks and peripheral equipment or in designing, programming and customizing databases. OR;

(B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three (3) years of experience as defined in (A) above. OR;

(C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

NOTE: Successful completion of a course of study offered by a technical training institute, college or a corporate training program may be substituted for the twelve (12) semester credit hours in college study or for one (1) year of appropriate experience if the following conditions are met:

(a) The course of training involves learning the fundamental aspects of computer programming, systems analysis, telecommunications systems, LAN/WAN system configuration or a similar course with technical emphasis on the operation of a connected computer system.

(b) The candidate provides an official description of the coursework and evidence that it was successfully completed.

Civil Service Description:

Classification: Competitive 

The incumbent has the responsibility for the identification and correction of network and system problems.  The incumbent performs duties during normal business hours or during the night and weekends as required.  The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-ranking professional.  Does related work as required. 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Software & Systems Testing: Assists in the testing of new operating systems and software titles for interoperability and functionality with existing systems and software and performs maintenance and patching as appropriate;

  • Infrastructure Installation: Installs and configures file servers, print servers, communication servers, network switches, personal computers, and printers (network and desktop);

  • Maintenance & Support: Installs and maintains personal computers and networks, including all peripheral equipment;

  • Hardware Upgrades: Upgrades computers and peripheral equipment;

  • Device Management: Maintenance and management of various computing devices using mobile device management platforms such as Jamf, Action1, Google Admin, etc.;

  • Content Filtering: Management of internet content filtering systems such as Deledao, Hapara, etc.;

  • Data Flow & Rostering: Management of rostering and data flow systems and protocols such as Clever, Classlink, SAML, Google SSO, etc.;

  • Telecommunications: Management of VoIP phone systems;

  • Student Information Systems: Assists with management of student informations systems;

  • Technical Support: Diagnoses computer and network problems on-site or by means of help desk staff with user telephone consultations;

  • Vendor Collaboration: Works with vendors to troubleshoot and resolve systems-related problems;

  • Professional Development: Attends seminars and technical education classes to keep abreast of current trends in information technology;

  • Additional Duties: Performs related tasks as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of modern personal computers, local and wide area networks, file servers, print servers, and communication servers; working knowledge of installation, configuration, maintenance, and management procedures relating to personal computers, local and wide area networks, peripheral equipment, network switches, and software, including operating systems; Working knowledge of mobile device management platforms, internet content filtering systems, rostering and data flow systems and protocols, and VoIP phone systems; ability to install and configure office computer systems, networks, and associated hardware; ability to test new operating systems and software for interoperability and functionality; ability to perform system maintenance and patching; ability to upgrade computers and peripheral equipment; ability to evaluate equipment configuration requirements; ability to diagnose computer system and network problems, both on-site and through remote consultation, and assist in their resolution, including working with vendors; ability to assist with the management of student information systems; ability to direct users in system and network use; ability to understand written material; ability to follow oral and written directions; commitment to keeping abreast of current trends in information technology through seminars and technical education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Graduation from a New York State registered or regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in management information systems, computer science, information resources management, information technology, or a closely related field and one (1) year of  paid full-time experience in the installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance of computer systems networks; OR
  2. Graduation from a New York State registered or regionally accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree in management information systems, computer science, information resources management, information technology, or a closely related field and three (3) years of  paid full-time experience in the installation, configuration, troubleshooting and maintenance of computer systems networks; OR
  3. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years of full-time paid experience in the installation, configuration, troubleshooting and maintenance of computer systems and networks; OR
  4. An equivalent combination of training and experience totaling 5 years as defined by the limits of (A), (B), and (C).
