School Bus Driver/Cleaner

The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School District is accepting applications for a School Bus Driver/Cleaner. This full-time, split-role position supports both the Transportation Department and the Custodial Department, ensuring safe student transportation and a clean, well-maintained school facility. This position is classified as Non-Competitive under Civil Service, covering both driving and custodial responsibilities.

Part 1: School Bus Driver (Civil Service – Non-Competitive)

This position involves responsibility for the operation of a school bus in transporting children to and from school-related activities. A School Bus Driver is responsible for the safety and conduct of children who are passengers. The work is performed under general supervision with considerable leeway allowed in carrying out the details of the work. Related duties are performed as required.

Typical Work Activities:

  • Operates a school bus on a regular schedule or on special trips
  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections
  • Reports operational defects to supervisor
  • Instructs children on proper safety procedures
  • Maintains order among passengers
  • Keeps vehicle clean inside and out
  • May operate other district vehicles (e.g., station wagon)
  • May perform minor vehicle maintenance
  • Maintains trip records: mileage, incidents, schedules, and routes
  • Prepares and updates route maps and pickup points
  • Performs related duties as required

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Good knowledge of traffic laws and driving safety
  • Ability to operate a bus under difficult driving conditions
  • Ability to perform minor repairs
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to interact positively with children and command respect
  • Mechanical aptitude

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid NYS Certified Driver’s License with “S” (School Bus) endorsement at time of appointment
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must meet all requirements set by the New York State Commissioner of Education for School Bus Drivers

Part 2: Cleaner (Civil Service – Non-Competitive)

This is routine work requiring the efficient performance of a variety of cleaning tasks. The work follows a well-established routine under the direct supervision of a higher-level supervisor. The incumbent performs related duties as required.

Typical Work Activities:

  • Dusts and cleans furniture, chairs, desks, and tables
  • Washes windows, walls, woodwork, sinks, and toilets
  • Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and waxes floors using appropriate equipment
  • Collects and disposes of garbage and recyclables
  • Cleans and polishes furniture
  • May operate a district motor vehicle
  • May clean blackboards, whiteboards, and erasers
  • May monitor restrooms and report non-smoking violations
  • Performs other routine cleaning duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to work well with others
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the job

Minimum Qualifications (Must meet one of the following):

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; OR
  • Three months of building cleaning experience; OR
  • Successful completion of a job training or job readiness program

Work Schedule:

  • Monday – Friday, 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM
  • Split between student transportation duties and evening custodial responsibilities

Position Overview: 

The Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake Central School District is seeking a skilled and motivated Auto Mechanic to join our Transportation Department. In this essential role, you will be responsible for maintaining and repairing the district’s fleet of school buses, vehicles, and other transportation equipment to ensure safe and reliable service for our students and staff. This is a full-time 8-hour/day position.

AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled work involving responsibility for efficient performance of a variety of vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance tasks. Direct supervision is received from a higher level employee, permitting considerable leeway for planning the details of each assignment. Direct supervision may be exercised over the work of Automotive Mechanic Helpers, Garage Attendants, laborers, or other subordinate employees. Incumbent does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Performs skilled operations in making general repairs on gasoline, alternative fuel, and diesel motor equipment such as trucks, passenger cars, tractors, motorcycles, power shovels, graders and bulldozers;
  • Removes, disassembles, repairs and assembles components of automotive transmissions, both standard and automatic;
  • Grinds valves and fits new bearings, pistons and rings;
  • Repairs or replaces water pumps, fuel pumps, generators, shock absorbers and distributors;
  • Adjusts connecting rods and bearings;
  • Assembles, times, and tunes engines;
  • Performs diagnostic analysis to determine repairs to, or replacement of, vehicles, trucks, and heavy equipment;
  • Does trouble-shooting and makes repairs to automotive air conditioning systems;
  • Repairs or overhauls ignition systems, brakes, differentials, carburetors, clutches, transmissions, and front and rear axles;
  • Straightens and welds frames and fenders, and performs body straightening and repairs;
  • Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels;
  • Operates machine shop equipment, including lathes, grinders, drill presses, and other metal working machines to make and repair parts for automotive equipment;
  • Makes repair estimates and prepares requisitions for materials and parts for both mechanical and body repairs;
  • Operates electronic analyzing equipment for the diagnosing and repair of all motor equipment and uses personal computer software as appropriate;
  • Checks automotive equipment for damaged, worn, or defective parts by visual inspection, road tests, and testing devices and makes or prescribes necessary repairs or replacements;
  • Keeps repair and maintenance records;
  • Inspects motor vehicles and heavy trucks under the New York State Motor Vehicle Inspection Law;
  • Performs a variety of related tasks as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the standard, advanced, and specialized automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trade; Good knowledge of welding practice using various methods on metal, stainless steel, and aluminum materials; Good knowledge of the purpose, function, operation, diagnostics, and repair of vehicles run on alternative fuels; Good knowledge of the functioning of hydraulic systems, including troubleshooting and repair; Good knowledge of the functioning of various fuel systems, including diagnostics and repair; Skill in making technically difficult repairs to automotive and other mechanical equipment; Skill in the diagnostics and repair of electronic ignition systems; Ability to follow oral and written instructions; Mechanical aptitude; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

(A)Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five years of experience as a skilled automotive mechanic which shall have involved electronic ignition systems, computer analyzing use of personal computer software in automotive applications, and diesel engine work; OR

(B)Completion of a two-year automotive repair course and three years of experience as outlined in (A) above; OR

(C)An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) above.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

(A)Possession of a valid Commercial Drivers License with endorsements required by the department where position exists at the time of appointment.

(B)Possession of a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Inspector's License for automobiles and heavy trucks within 120 days of appointment.

(C) Maintenance of personal tools as required.

School Bus Driver 2025-26

A School Bus Driver is responsible for the safety and conduct of the children who are passengers. The work is performed under general supervision with considerable leeway allowing the operator in carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

  • Operates a school bus on a regular schedule or on special occasions;
  • Checks the operating condition of the bus before starting on a trip;
  • Reports any operational defect to the immediate superior;
  • Informs children about safety practices;
  • Maintains orderly conduct of children on a bus;
  • Keeps interior and exterior of vehicle clean and neat;
  • May be required to operate a station wagon or other similar vehicle;
  • May be required to perform minor maintenance tasks on the vehicle;
  • Maintains records of mileage, routes, times, and incidents;
  • Prepares and maintains maps of routes and pick-up points;
  • Performs a variety of related duties as required.

Full performance knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics

Good knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic laws and regulations; ability to operate a bus under difficult driving and road conditions; ability to make minor repairs to the vehicle; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to get along well with children and command their respect; mechanical aptitude.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of Certified Driver’s License with a “S” School Bus endorsement at time of appointment. Drivers must be at least 21 years of age and must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education.

School Bus Monitor 2025-26

School Bus Monitor

2025-2026 School Year. 

A bus monitor will work under the supervision of a bus driver who rides in a van or bus on designated routes transporting school pupils, or clients to and from school or locations.

In addition, a bus monitor may ride a bus or van to assist and monitor clients on private charter trips.

Bus monitors may work with loud and disruptive clients.

Monitors may also work with handicapped individuals.

Monitor pupils and daily school bus activities to ensure proper student conduct at all times, and adherence to proper and safe behavior standards on the bus

Maintain attendance and ridership records and assign seating as necessary to ensure good student behavior

Observe and learn established bus routes so that when substitute drivers are operating the bus, directional and routing assistance can be given.

As requested by the Operations Manager or Dispatcher, verify route turn for turn sheets and note any route changes with written notes.

As requested by the Operations Manager or Dispatcher, make additional directional or landmark notations on bus route sheets to assist future, new, or substitute bus drivers.

As requested by the Operations Manager or Dispatcher, observe and track route timing, such as total time en-route;

     Time between stops; loading and unloading times or any other requested information for the purpose of establishing route efficiency

Ensure safe loading and unloading of students on and off the bus

As required, verify student use of seat belts and assist with securing or removing belts

Assist bus driver with sweeping and cleaning bus interior

Establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships with bus drivers, district personnel, students and parents

All other duties as assigned
