The District is seeking qualified candidates for the position of School Bus Monitor for the 2026-2027 school year.

A School Bus Monitor works under the supervision of the Bus Driver and Transportation Department to help ensure the safe transportation of students to and from school and other approved destinations. The position requires monitoring student behavior, assisting students as needed, and supporting safe bus operations.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Monitor students during transportation to ensure safe and appropriate behavior at all times.
  • Assist with the safe loading and unloading of students.
  • Verify student use of seat belts and assist with securing or removing restraints as needed.
  • Maintain attendance and ridership records and assign seating when necessary.
  • Support students with special needs and assist individuals with disabilities as required.
  • Observe and learn established bus routes to provide routing assistance to substitute drivers when necessary.
  • Assist the Operations Manager or Dispatcher with route verification, route timing observations, and documentation of route changes.
  • Make route and landmark notations to support future, new, or substitute drivers.
  • Monitor route efficiency by observing travel times, stop times, and loading/unloading procedures as requested.
  • Assist the Bus Driver with maintaining a clean and orderly bus interior.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, parents, drivers, district staff, and community members.
  • Work effectively with students who may be loud, disruptive, or require additional supervision.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.

School Bus Driver 2026-27 School Year

This position involves responsibility for the operation of a school bus in the transporting of children to and from school-related activities. A School Bus Driver is responsible for the safety and conduct of the children who are passengers. The work is performed under general supervision with considerable leeway allowing the operator in carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as required.

Typical Work Activities

  • Operates a school bus on a regular schedule or on special occasions;
  • Checks the operating condition of the bus before starting on a trip;
  • Reports any operational defect to the immediate superior;
  • Informs children about safety practices;
  • Maintains orderly conduct of children on a bus;
  • Keeps interior and exterior of vehicle clean and neat;
  • May be required to operate a station wagon or other similar vehicle;
  • May be required to perform minor maintenance tasks on the vehicle;
  • Maintains records of mileage, routes, times, and incidents;
  • Prepares and maintains maps of routes and pick-up points;
  • Performs a variety of related duties as required.

Full performance knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics

Good knowledge of driving safety practices and traffic laws and regulations; ability to operate a bus under difficult driving and road conditions; ability to make minor repairs to the vehicle; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; ability to get along well with children and command their respect; mechanical aptitude.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of Certified Driver’s License with a “S” School Bus endorsement at time of appointment. Drivers must be at least 21 years of age and must satisfy the requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education.
