Job Title: K–12 Science Director

Job Summary:

The K–12 Science Director provides leadership, supervision, and support for the district’s science program. This role ensures alignment with national and state standards, facilitates curriculum innovation, and oversees the effective delivery of science instruction across all grade levels. The Director works collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and district leadership to support high-quality science education that meets the diverse needs of all students.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership in the development, implementation, and evaluation of science curricula K–12, ensuring alignment with state and national standards and current regulations.
  • Stay informed of best practices and instructional methods in science education and serve as a resource for teachers and administrators.
  • Facilitate the development of innovative and differentiated science courses, including AIS (Academic Intervention Services), PACE, AP, STEAM, and dual enrollment/college-credit-bearing courses.
  • Coordinate the administration, scoring, and data submission of local and state science assessments; ensure accuracy and compliance with state guidelines.
  • Support and guide professional development efforts for science educators, identifying and organizing relevant learning opportunities.
  • Serve as Chair of the K–12 Science Committee and lead the committee following shared decision-making principles.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate science teachers in collaboration with building principals.
  • Assist with the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of science faculty.
  • Develop and manage department budgets, ensuring responsible use of financial resources and long-range planning for science instruction.
  • Maintain the District Chemical Hygiene Plan in compliance with applicable safety regulations.
  • May be assigned teaching responsibilities based on instructional needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent of Schools.

Qualifications:

  • Valid New York State certification in School District Leadership (SDL), School Building Leadership (SBL), or equivalent.
  • Master’s degree or higher in science education or a related field.
  • Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience in science, preferably across multiple grade levels.
  • Demonstrated leadership in curriculum development, teacher support, and professional learning.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with assessment coordination, data analysis, and educational planning preferred.
     

  • Full-time, 210-day work year.
  • District-wide responsibilities; travel between buildings is required.
  • Some evening or weekend commitments for meetings or events may be necessary.

Job Summary:

The K-12 Administrator for Reading and Literacy will provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for all aspects of reading and literacy instruction across the district, from Universal Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. This pivotal role will be responsible for ensuring equitable access to high-quality literacy instruction and promoting strong reading outcomes for all students. The Administrator will lead the implementation of research-based literacy practices, with a particular emphasis on the Science of Reading, and will work collaboratively with school leaders, teachers, and staff to continuously improve literacy achievement.

 


Key Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum and Instruction Leadership (Pre-K-12):

    • Lead the development, implementation, and ongoing refinement of a comprehensive Pre-K-12 reading/literacy and writing curriculum, aligned with New York State Learning Standards and current research in the Science of Reading.
    • Oversee and support early literacy instruction in grades PK-5, ensuring foundational reading skills are explicitly taught.
    • Provide expert guidance and support for reading and writing instruction across all grade levels (Pre-K-12), addressing diverse student needs, including struggling readers and advanced learners.
    • Lead the implementation of the new reading series (Benchmark Advance) across the Pre-K-12 spectrum.
    • Organize and facilitate Pupil Assistance Team meetings to review and assign response to intervention reading services to students K-5
    • Lead the District Enrichment Committee and programs K-5, including student placement in elementary PACE (enrichment) programs and core and honors ELA placements for grade 6.
    • Coordinate Universal Pre-Kindergarten programming including general oversight as well as all required paperwork and other communication associated with running the program
    • Chair the K-12 ELA Curriculum Committee.
    • Collaborate regularly with the District Department Head for English to ensure vertical alignment K-12
  • Teacher Evaluation and Support:

    • Conduct regular teacher evaluations (K-12), providing constructive feedback and support for professional growth.
    • Collaborate with principals and other instructional leaders to identify professional learning needs and develop targeted interventions to improve teacher practice in literacy.
    • Design and deliver professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators on evidence-based literacy practices, writing, the Science of Reading, and effective instructional strategies.
    • Organize and facilitate data meetings with 3-12 ELA teachers to review assessment information and develop instructional and intervention strategies.
  • Program Implementation and Monitoring:

    • Develop and implement a robust system for monitoring student progress in reading and writing, using data to inform instructional decisions and program adjustments.
    • Lead and facilitate various literacy-focused committee meetings, fostering collaboration and ensuring alignment of NYSED and district-wide literacy initiatives.
    • Stay current with emerging research and best practices in literacy, reading, and writing education, translating findings into actionable strategies for the district.
    • Provide professional development opportunities for staff in areas under your purview.
  • Administrative and Collaborative Duties:

    • Report directly to the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, providing regular updates on program progress, challenges, and successes.
    • Collaborate effectively with other district leaders, school principals, and teacher leaders to integrate literacy across content areas.
    • Manage budgets related to literacy programs and resources.
    • Communicate effectively with parents and the community regarding literacy initiatives and student progress.
  • Teaching Responsibility:

    • This position may include up to a 0.4 FTE teaching responsibility within the certification area.


Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Deep knowledge and understanding of the Science of Reading, including the NYS Literacy Briefs and the Pre-K-3 Attestation.
  • Extensive experience and expertise in elementary reading and writing instruction, particularly for grades K-6 and Universal Pre-Kindergarten.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and deliver effective professional development for educators.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze data and use it to inform instructional decisions.
  • Familiarity with various reading assessment tools and their application.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction strategies for diverse learners.
  • Ability to build strong, collaborative relationships with stakeholders at all levels.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Literacy, Reading, or other related field.
  • Valid New York State certification in Literacy (Birth-Grade 6 or Birth-Grade 12 or other NYS certification providing expertise in literacy instruction).
  • Valid New York State SDL certification.
  • Minimum of 3 years of successful experience as a classroom teacher or other professional, with a significant focus on reading instruction.
